How Do You Fix the “Your Computer’s Trusted Platform Module Has Malfunctioned” Error?
As discussed, the error pops up due to various reasons. A simple fix like restarting your PC, and updating your OS can do the trick. However, you might have to go for more comprehensive fixes like clearing the TPM Service client.
Solution 1: Restart your Computer
Before we move onto our “real” fixes, we recommend restarting your PC. If a minor glitch or error is responsible, this will help. Just head on over to the Power-off menu, and hit the Restart button.
Give the below fixes a try if the error still pops up.
Solution 2: Manually Enable/Disable the TPM Service
Manually turning on and off the TPM service can fix the problem:
- Press and hold the Windows + R keys to launch the Run box
- Enter the following command: TPM.msc
- Hit enter once you’re done
- Go to the Action panel
- Click on the Turn TPM Off button
This is optional, but we recommend rebooting your PC afterwards. Remember to go back and re-enable the service.
Solution 3: Clear the TPM Keys
Instead of disabling the TPM service, you can try clearing it. All its temporary data would be cleared.
Here’s what you do:
- Head to the Device Security menu on the left-hand side of the menu page
- Click on the Security Processor Details button
- Go to the Security Processor Troubleshooting section
- Click on the Clear TPM button
- Wait for the process to be done
Once again, give your PC a reboot. The issue should be cleared up now.
Solution 4: Disable Hyper-V
Disabling Hyper-V is a fix that many users have had luck with. That being said, we have not.
If you still want to go this route, here’s what you do:
- Open the Control Panel
- Click on the Programs button
- Click on the Turn Windows Features On/Off feature
- Look for the Hyper-v folder from the Windows features on the list
- Uncheck the option and hit the Ok button to save the documents you were working on
Solution 5: Update Windows
When was the last time you updated Windows? If you haven’t done this in a while, it can lead to errors.
Make sure you have a stable internet connection before proceeding. The process will take too long if not.
Here’s what you do:
- Go to the Start menu
- Click on the Update & Security option
- Tap the Windows Update button
- Select Check for Updates and wait for your system to be scanned.
If the new OS version is large, the update might take a while. Your internet speed will play a role in how long you’ll have to wait too.
Solution 6: Use an Anti-virus
You might be dealing with a virus. Ask yourself whether you installed any apps or files recently. This might have caused the issue.
Downloading an anti-virus would be the only way around this. Now, there are several on the market so you might not know how to choose one. We’ve discussed how you can use Avast to fix the problem:
- Go to the Avast website
- Download the free version for your PC/Mac version
- Launch the software after it installs
- Click the Scan button
- Wait for it to check your system for any issues
Solution 7: Create a New Local Account
Although this won’t fix the problem, it will help you work around it. Basically, you have to create a new local account, and then use it to bypass the Windows error.
Here’s how you do this:
- Go to the Start menu
- Click on Settings, then select the Accounts button
- Tap the Family & Other Users button
- Click on the Add Someone to this PC option
- Finally click on the Select Add without a Microsoft account to confirm
